  1. Quick question, as a programmer, which one is a better platform for mobile applications, Android or WM7.

  2. Sorry, I have little idea, as I am not too familiar with Android or WM7.

However, I had recently discussed this topic with two MBA classmates. It is a demand side increasing return (DSIR) problem. The more users there are on iPhone or Android, the more likely programmers are going to write programs on them. The two are in a positive feedback loop. Therefore, the first mover into this game has a lot of advantage, even if their product is not as good as its competitors’.

WM7 may already be too late to the game. It needs to orchestrate a coordinated effort to move large groups of users from iPhone or Android in order to make the WM7 platform feasible. If MS can “buy” a lot of programmers AND users over, WM7 may still have a chance.

Unlike traditional markets, where a sizable demand can sustain multiple suppliers. In a platform with DSIR properties, it is more likely that only a few platform can emerge as winners.

  3. Thx for your reply. I also talked to one of my friend who’s a progammer for years. He told me, personally, he would prefer Android platform, the most important reason is the openness of the platform itself. Basically, he was telling the story about Apple and Microsoft. But since Apple is Apple, Jobs just the like the way it’s, and it turned out to be very good at this stage. But on the mobile application platform, it seems to be a totally new market. From his perspective, he would prefer Android.

Again, thank you for your reply. We are thinking to work on some industrial applications for mobile devices.

  4. I have actually heard that the iOS developer environment is a lot of nicer than Android’s, if you are concerned about this.

  5. Thx. I started from there. But at the end, my partner conviced me that we should focus on industry appliations, where the cost of hardware also has to be taken into account. But the market is much larger than just apple users. For Android, i can get something pretty cheap and workable. That’s why we consider openness of the system as a very important factor. But anyway, thank you for your suggestions.

  6. First, Android is not so open as many people thought.
Second, isn’t “Cheap” not always a good thing for a product and its market?
And third, nothing is too late for MS. Just taking XBOX360 for example, you can see MS has successfully made many talented programmer jumped into 360 Game’s development from PC game industry, it means that MS can also made many programmers who are skilled at C/C++/C# to jump into their mobile market, just like they have done before.

*Just some premature ideas in my choppy English :p
